It has been a staple of the Strip for decades. Located on the southeast corner of one of the busiest intersections in Las Vegas, Tropicana Ave. and Las Vegas Blvd. the Tropicana is in the midst of a $180 million renovation. The changes are partially complete with new chairs for the slot machine, new carpeting, and a completely revamped South Beach look from the lettering in the “Tropicana” sign outside to new marble tiling. In addition the entire face of the casino has been redone with a cream white marble exterior. The rooms of the Paradise tower have been redone as well with new furnishings, 42 inch plasma television, iPod docks and plantation shutters. You may even sense a slight change in the hallways as the fresh scent of coconut wafts throughout to really give it a tropical feel. And the renovations are not complete yet. Coming this year will be a renovated spa, their Race and Sports Book will have additional seating and more big screens, and later in 2011 Nikki Beach will offer a conceptual pool experience with daybeds and a South Beach vibe, then at night it will convert into Club Nikki, a 15,000 square foot club that opens up onto the beach.
The Tropicana is steeped in old school Las Vegas history. To honor this they are opening the Las Vegas Mob Experience with actual artifacts from the period like jewelry, clothes, diaries of mobsters, weapons, photos and more. It will be a 27,000 square foot museum with 32 separate rooms.
Currently Tropicana is in the midst of too many changes to nail down the exact clientele. The future goal will be to appeal to a younger party crowd. Prior to renovations it was, frankly, dying a slow death. Most of the patrons were older and it was consistently one of the last hotels located directly on the Strip to fill. Even so, during busy holidays and weekends during the summer booking ahead is recommended. This is going to be more the case most likely in the future as more and more renovations are completed.
The Tropicana has a very small casino by Strip standards at only 50,000 square feet. They offer a limited number of table games, but all of the classics like Craps, Blackjack, Let it Ride, and Roulette. There are slot machines all over the casino floor, the exact number is unclear, but they are rarely if ever all full so gamblers have no problem finding a seat. Their Race and Sports Book is being renovated but you can currently step inside, as of now it is small by Strip standards but that may change in the future.
The rooms are being renovated, and many of them already have been. There are 1,658 total, it is a very small casino on the Strip The rooms are still a bit on the small side by Strip standards as well but now they are very new. They look great, are clean and well kept. The main attraction is the price. Tropicana may be the best deal dollar for dollar on the Strip and that is not an exaggeration. If you only need a room to sleep in while you go out and enjoy everything Vegas has to offer, this is an excellent choice.
As mentioned, the prices are absolutely outstanding for the location. Room rates vary according to occupancy and any special events in Las Vegas, but are consistently some of the least expensive on the Strip. Gambling limits are generally low but based in part on clientele. Restaurants and entertainment are both priced very well.
It’s a smaller hotel and they offer limited options for dining, what they do have though is all very nice and well priced; Bacio by Carla Pellegrino, Biscayne Steak, Sea and Win, Café Nikki, and South Beach Marketplace.
There are bars on the casino floor, and of course drinks are free to gamblers, tipping is customary. Ambhar Tequila Lounge is an excellent lounge and place to grab a couple of drinks, and they often host live music or DJ’s.
Shopping is limited and includes a shoe shop, clothing store, and a gift store.
Nikki Beach should be opening April 2011 and promises to be a unique club experience at night with access to their beach.
Regular services are available like maid, luggage, and guest services. Shuttle service is available to and from the airport through an outside firm for a fee.
